Aviation in the Maldives
The Maldives operates a quniue aviation environment. There are three international airports - Velana International Airport (VIA) in the Greater Malé Region, Hanimaadhoo Airport in the north, and Gan Airport in the south alongside 15 domestic airports spread across the atolls. The country also operates the world's largest seaplane fleet, connecting remote resort islands and communities across the Country.
Velana International Airport is the primary international gateway. In 2025 alone, VIA processed over 4.3 million passengers and more than 64,649 tonnes of cargo. That volume increases every year alongside tourism growth. For millions of visitors and thousands of Maldivians, aviation is not a luxury, it is the only way to move across a nation with no roads between islands.
Between 2001 and 2024, the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority recorded 32 accidents and 12 minor incidents across the national aviation network. Crucially, none of these recent events resulted in fatalities or major passenger injuries. This contrasts sharply with the 1990s, when a series of helicopter accidents primarily attributed to mechanical and technical failures — resulted in 23 fatalities. The improvements in safety standards since that period reflect how significantly the sector has strengthened.
