What is Heat Stress?
Heat stress occurs when the human body’s ability to regulate its temperature is overwhelmed, leading to a rise in core body temperature and potentially causing various heat-related illnesses. Often when weather conditions where temperatures are unusually high and above the climatological norm for a given location and time of year, typically lasting several days or longer, and posing significant health risks, especially to vulnerable populations.
Extreme Heat in the Maldives
Heat Stress can affect people and places across the Maldives in different ways. Urbanized islands and dense neighborhoods can trap heat, increasing risk during periods of high temperature and humidity. These issues are compounded by the climate crisis, increasing the severity & duration of extreme heat events. We face longer & stronger periods of high temperatures, straining our communities & environment even more.
We experience extreme heat during the Iruvai season, with the warmest periods from March to May. While temperature readings might be in the 30s it might feel much higher given atmospheric conditions

These issues are compounded by the climate crisis, escalating the severity and duration of extreme heat events. We're facing longer and stronger periods of scorching temperatures, intensifying the strain on our communities and environment.
How to Stay Alert and Prepared
Rising temperatures and unusually hot conditions can signal the onset of extreme heat. To stay informed and act early, follow official updates from the Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS), Health Protection Agency (HPA), National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and the Maldivian Red Crescent (MRC).
Monitor information shared by authorities, local council, along with radio, TV, and official social media channels, also share timely alerts and safety guidance to help you stay prepared.
